Authentic, Hand-woven Navajo Rug, Ye'ii Pattern
Navajo Weaver: Roselyn Mark

Bio information on Roselyn Mark and other Navajo weavers.

Each Navajo rug from Bair's Indian Trading Company is hand-woven of 100% wool yarn on traditional upright looms by members of the Navajo Nation. Materials range from hand-carded, handspun, and natural color or vegetal dyed wool, to commercially cleaned, carded, spun, and dyed wool. Miniature Navajo rugs are likewise hand-woven of 100% wool that is generally respun commercial yarn. They are woven in the same manner as the full sized rugs and most are of tapestry quality (over 80 wefts per inch). All Navajo weavings offered for sale on our site have been woven by contemporary weavers in regional and non-regional styles. They have intact edging and selvage cords and corner tassles, and are without stains, fading, holes, or insect damage.

Ye'ii rug by Navajo weaver Roselyn Mark
Size: 14" wide x 10" high
Roselyn Mark specializes in small Ye'ii weavings. This one is woven on a field of white, with a black border and a serrated interior top and bottom border of pastel green. It has a single central Ye'ii figure of light gray, dark chocolate brown, medium brown, salmon, and turquoise green with a dark mustard yellow tassled, pastel green corn plant on each side. The Rainbow Ye'ii bordering the corn has the same colors as the central Ye'ii, with the addition of a dark mustard yellow skirt.
"Ye'ii (YEH-ee) figures appeared on rugs before the turn of the (20th) century. (A Ye'ii is a Navajo holy person or deity.) At first the Navajo considered putting a Ye'ii into a rug design taboo. Near the turn of the century Navajo weaver Yanapah, married to Richard Simpson (a trader near Farmington, NM), wove large, single and double-figure, vertical Ye'ii rugs. (The figures were standing upright as the rug was being woven.)"
8 warps/inch.
34 wefts/inch.

This weaving has a "Spirit Line" also, know as a "Weaver's Pathway" at the bottom right corner (above) of the serrated border design passing through the black outer border.

Navajo Yei rug
"Ye'ii rugs developed in two other regions a few years after the turn of the century. At Shiprock, NM, trader Will Evans helped develop multiple-figure Ye'ii weavings in the 1920's. They usually had white or light-colored backgrounds with several figures positioned horizontally across the rug as it was being woven. (The figures stood upright when the rug was turned sideways after weaving.) They had a multitude of bright, aniline-dyed colors and frequently used a great deal of commercial yarn."
