Biographical information on Ethel Shields and other Indian potters of the Southwest.

Acoma Pueblo is located in Northwest New Mexico and is over 1,000 years old. Acoma pottery is traditionally thin-walled and made with gray or white clay tempered with volcanic ash and crushed sherds of broken pottery. The white slip is made from a white chalky material called Kaolin. The elaborate decoration uses paint made from black hematite, an iron oxide mineral, and vegetal plant material, including beeweed juice and natural spinach. Other colors in traditionally made pots are from natural sources. Intricate geometric designs, flowers, birds and animals, and revival patterns of the Mimbres culture are all popular today. The smoothed but unpolished and thin-walled pottery has a matte velvet feel to it that is different from other pueblos.
