The Native American artisans from Santo Domingo Pueblo are renowned for their work cutting, shaping, and polishing of shell and stone such as turquoise to make fine heisi necklaces and for their mosaic inlay jewelry. Their work is most similar to the long tradition of their ancestral Puebloans than is currently produced by other modern Pueblo jewelry makers. Their beadwork to make heishi is first drilled and strung on wire, and then corners are clipped, and the strand of roughly shaped shell or stones is drawn back and forth over a grinding wheel to carefully shape the heishi. Once the size and degree of polishing is acheived, the beads are then restrung. Their work is superior to the widely distributed imported shell heishi in that the Santo Domingo artisans will produce a finer quality with very smooth feeling and uniform beads that fit tightly together. | ||
