Hopi overlay jewelry
"Overlay, as used in Hopi silverwork, is basically a piece of silver with a design cut out of it - a negative design...The smiths work from sheet silver and most trace their designs from metal templates they have already cut out. A hole is punched in the silver part to be cut out, and a tiny saw blade is inserted. Then the design is carefully sawed out, the most painstaking step in the whole process...After the design is sawed, it is well coated with a flux, as is the plain piece of silver. Bits of solder are placed on the base layer, the top one is laid on, and the two are heated to a red glow with an acetylene torch. The solder flows between the two pieces, firmly soldering them together. After the piece of silver is cooled, the matting or texturing of the design is done." The piece is hammered into its finished shape, is blanched in acid to remove any discolorations, and the interior of the design is oxidized. After further finishing work is done such as filing and polishing, it is cleaned, and then buffed and polished. -Quoted from "Hopi Silver, the History and Hallmarks of Hopi Silversmithing" by Margaret Nickelson Wright
