Handmade Beaded Corn Earrings
Beader: Alice Begay
(Navajo)

These beautiful beaded earrings, made to look like ears of corn, were done with a peyote stitch by Navajo craftsperson Alice Begay from the Shiprock, NM area. She has used very thin leathers for the husks the colors of which will vary. Of the two sizes of beaded corn earrings that we carry, this larger size will vary from 1.25" to 1.5" long, plus the ear wire for an overall length of 2" to 2.25". They are 3/8" to 1/2" in diameter and usually taper from top to bottom. Most of the earrings are made from size 12 glass seed beads and an occassional pair may be made from a smaller size 14. Other colors may be available besides those pictured below.

Corn is the most sacred of all Native American plants and it has been a dietary staple of the Indians of the southwest for 3000 years. To the Navajo, corn, the symbol of food, fertility, and life itself, is of major importance. Standing straight and tall, corn resembles human beings standing in rows. White corn is thought, by the Navajo, to be male, yellow corn is female. "The Navajo also use corn meal and corn pollen in their religious observances, and corn (nah-tah) is one of the four sacred plants." Quotes are from "Spirit in the Stone, a Handbook of Southwest Indian Animal Carvings and Beliefs," by Mark Bahti, courtesy of Rio Nuevo Publishers.
