8 Plant Navajo Herbal Medicine Chart

Navajo Medicine Charts, also referred to as Herb Charts, display samples of plants that are the source for natural herbal medicines that have been accepted as helping to relieve the symptoms of a wide variety of ailments. Every Medicine Chart is different and the plant samples will vary as to the time of the year during which they were harvested. Also, the "ceremonial basket" or "medicine pouch" displayed along with the plant material will vary in size, design, and color.

Self-leveling hangers are generally attached to the back.

Medicine charts are available with 5 to 16 plants and range in size from 5" x 7" up to 18" x 24" in finished wood frames. Prices range from $28.00 to $195.00. Frames are assorted in light and dark wood and generally do not have hangers on the back. One can add a nail-on hanger or place them in an easel for easy display. Dye Charts showing various plants that are the source for natural vegetal dyes used by Navajo weavers to dye wool are also available for generally the same sizes and prices. This Herbal Medicine Chart displays: Snake Weed, Navajo Tea, Blue Flower Lupine, Sumac Berries, Rabbit Brush, Juniper Mistletoe, and Purple Bee Plant.

Some Charts feature a representation of a "ceremonial basket" which is woven of yarn.
Other Charts feature a"medicine pouch" which is usually made of deerskin and may
be fringed and beaded, though it's just a one-sided representation.
