"Call them fetishes,
charms, amulets, talismans, or simply good luck pieces, virtually every
culture has them. In contemporary Euro-American cultures, the best-known
ones include such diverse items as a horseshoe for general good luck,
a rabbit's foot for a more portable source of good luck, and a St. Christopher
medal for safety while traveling. Fetish is a poor English equivalent
for a concept which has a different name and even a somewhat different
meaning in each language of the Native American tribes that use such objects.
Even in a single culture, such as the Zuni, there are many different categories
of fetishes." From, "Spirit in the Stone," by Mark Bahti, courtesy of Rio Nuevo Publishers. Please see our book selection for this and other books on fetish carvings. |
